Show Summary: Set in the fictional town of Zion, Indiana, during the Great Depression, this luminous dramedy follows a small community dealing with faith, trauma, and tragedy.
Character Descriptions:
BUDDY LAYMAN (aged 16-19): A sweet, innocent, and trusting teenager (aged 16-19) who is mentally challenged. After a childhood near-drowning accident that killed his mother, he developed severe aquaphobia but gained a supernatural “water-witching” gift to divine wells and predict rain.
C.C. SHOWERS (late 20’s or early 30’s): A charismatic, fast- talking former preacher in his late 20’s or early 30’s who has
lost his faith. He wanders into town, looking for manual labor, bonds deeply with Buddy, and tries to help him overcome his fear of water.
JENNIE MAE LAYMAN (late teens or early 20’s): Buddy’s protective, loving, and curious teenage sister. She acts as a
mother figure to Buddy.
FERRIS LAYMAN (40-50): Buddy and Jennie Mae’s father. He is a hardworking, dependable, and honest local mechanic who hires C.C. Showers.
BASIL BENNETT (40+): A wise, older local farmer who doubles as the town’s informal “doctor” and acts as the steady backbone of the community.
LUELLA BENNETT (35+): Basil’s opinionated, steadfast, and skeptical wife who doubts Buddy’s divining abilities.
NORMA HENSHAW (35+): The fiercely religious, Bible-quoting owner of the Hoosier Dry-Goods store who tries to pressure C.C. back into preaching.
DARLENE HENSHAW (aged 16-19): Norma’s dramatic, rebellious, and flirty teenage niece.
GOLDIE SHORT (35+): The direct, honest, and bossy owner of the town’s Dine-Away-Café.
MELVIN WILDER & DEWEY MAPLES (17-25): Naïve, goofy, young farmhands who work for Basil and serve as the play’s primary comic relief.
