On Stage

Probably the most obvious activity taking place onstage in a theatre is acting. The actors are the most visible part of the story being told. They’re the face of the production. If you’ve been onstage before, you understand the commitment, the hours of rehearsal, memorizing lines, building a character within the story, creating relationships with the other characters in the cast, blowing your lines and forgetting your entrances 2 days before opening night. Worse yet, ASKING for a line during dress rehearsal! These are the highs and lows of performing on stage. The people that walk across the boards at Center Street Arts are some of the most talented, dedicated artists in the area. And some of them have way too many trophies…

The New Depot Players are constantly looking for new talent. All of our auditions are open to the public. No experience is required. We’ll post the auditions here on the website and send out email alerts to people on our list well in advance of the audition dates. Make sure you’re signed up to get them by subscribing to our e-list.

There are a few other select people that you may not see onstage the night of the show, but you can be sure they’ve walked the boards countless times preparing, listening, watching, critiquing – making sure the story told holds true to their vision. These people are the directors. The New Depot Players is proud of the quality live theatre that happens onstage at Center Street Arts, and these people are the ones that are charged with making sure that it happens each and every performance. They’re also the ones that have to explain to the actors why asking for a line during dress rehearsal could be considered a “bad thing.”

We’re looking to expand our current roster of directors over the next few years. If you’re interested, we have a director program with several paths you can follow to join their ranks. Whether you’ve directed hundreds of shows or just want to find out if you can take things to the next level, we have several ways to get you involved.

Our directors love to have energetic, hard-working assistants by their sides, too. These fire-putter-outters and troubleshooters are masters of note-taking, can run rehearsals when I-20 holds the director for ransom and are constantly working and tweaking scenes to make sure the vision of the director comes through when the lights come up. You know who you are, and we’d love to have your expert assistance no matter what level of experience you have. Hey, we’ve got on the set training.

And speaking of workshops, The New Depot Players will hold some classes during the year where you can learn how to audition, work on your character development, polish up your monologues and get introduced to directing, assistant directing, stage management, lights and sound, set design and construction, costuming… you get the idea.
